Tiffiney Alexis-Simeon

I am a fourth year Professional Communications student at Toronto Metropolitan University. As a tactical, creative, and detail-oriented storyteller, I look to prioritize maintained accessibility and the empowerment of marginalized communities through all of my work. My studies in the Toronto Metropolitan University Professional Communications program has equipped me with the skills necessary in order to identify audience needs, strategize media campaigns, and transform information for optimized adaptability. With two years of experience in film production studies, I have specialized interests in video editing, videography, and strategic storytelling. In the future of my professional career, I hope to develop targeted media campaigns which amplify diverse perspectives, cultivate connection, and spark discourse.

This research analysis explores the links between short-form video media and aspects of cognitive development such as social and behavioural development in school-aged children. As social media platforms such as TikTok have continued to dominate global social spheres since their release, it is important to identify potential risk factors for diverse groups within the user base.

This analysis involved a mixed-methods approach involving both observations of quantitative data found within academic research studies as well as a synthesis of qualitative data through a social media sentiment review.

The findings of this analysis concluded that, despite a lack of extensive research on this topic due to the recency of social media, there have been studies finding positive correlations between short-form video media and the development of school-aged children. This analysis also found that there is strong qualitative evidence supporting the notion that parents, caregivers, and society at large are concerned with the current state of short-form media geared toward child audiences.
