Concussions in Hockey: Do the Rules Really Protect Players?

Hi, I’m Logan Boutros. I’m nearly finished my Professional Communication degree at TMU. I’ve developed a strong interest in media, content creation, and how people connect through communication. Outside of school and work, I like to play hockey, watch movies and sports, and trying out nice food spots around the city. I’m excited to see where the next chapter of life will take me next.

This study explores how recent safety rules in hockey such as NHL’s Rule 48 and the U-13 body-check ban, have affected concussion risks and long-term brain health for players. It also has an in-depth analysis with how often concussions occur under different rule eras, and how a history of two or more concussions relates to future problems of depression and anxiety. This report uses existing data from medical studies, league records, and player accounts, it highlights key patterns, including reduced youth concussion rates but persistent long-term risks for athletes with repeated head injuries. The main objective of this report is to understand how well current rules protect athletes over their lifetimes and to consider what additional supports are needed for their cognitive and mental health beyond just basic injury prevention.
