Let’s watch the game: sports broadcasts and social interaction

As a professional communication student as well as an avid reader, I’ve always been drawn to storytelling. Alongside my communication studies I’ve spent time developing my creative skills. The work I’m most proud of combines strategic communication with engaging storytelling to create content that feels both purposeful and easy to connect with.

One of my favorite pastimes is getting on my bike and riding around the city. Living in Toronto has shaped my interest in how communication can highlight different experiences across its neighbourhoods. Each area has its own personality and history that create a dynamic community. Through my work in communication I aim to highlight these stories in ways that fosters connections and strengthens community.



Most media today is consumed on demand. While convenient, this has reduced a significant number of shared experiences that once fostered community. Sports broadcasts remain one of the few forms of media that people regularly consume in sync. 

With this in mind, how does the presence of sports broadcasts in community hubs, such as a local sports bar, influence social interactions and shape perception of community? This research explores how sports broadcasts can be used strategically to create accessible and welcoming environments that foster a sense of community.
