Ariana Perez is an undergraduate student in the professional communication program at Toronto Metropolitan University, with a strong interest in digital media, mental health, and the societal impact of emerging communication technologies. Her academic work explores how media environments shape human behavior, perception, and well-being.

Her capstone research investigates the effects of short-form social media platforms on mental health and attention among young adults, with a focus on algorithmic design and communication processes. Through her work, she aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of digital media influence and to support more critical and informed engagement with contemporary media platforms.

This research examines the effects of short-form social media use on mental health and attention among young adults. As platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels become increasingly central to everyday communication, their algorithm driven and fast paced design raises important questions about how digital environments shape user experiences.

Using a qualitative review of peer-reviewed research in communication and psychology, this study identifies key psychological and cognitive mechanisms that mediate these effects. Findings highlight the role of social comparison and emotional reinforcement in influencing mental health outcomes, as well as the impact of rapid content consumption on cognitive load and attention.

Overall, the project demonstrates that the effects of social media extend beyond screen time, emphasizing the importance of platform design and communication structures. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how contemporary media environments influence well-being and cognitive engagement, while underscoring the need for media literacy and more transparent digital practices.
