The TikTok Ban Controversy: Balancing National Security & Free Speech

Biography

A young East Asian woman with long, wavy brown hair and blonde highlights, including a face-framing streak, wears a light blue and white striped shirt with sleeves rolled up and clear glasses hanging from the neckline. She smiles broadly with rosy cheeks and dimples, her arms crossed, while seated at a table in what appears to be a cafe with exposed brick walls, wooden beams, and a counter area in the background.

My name is Mai Nguyen. I’m an international student from Vietnam, currently studying Professional Communication at TMU. Throughout my studies, I’ve developed strong skills in media strategy, content creation, and brand storytelling. I’m passionate about Marketing and PR and hoping to build a career in this field. Outside of academics, I love traveling, capturing moments on film, and playing the guitar.

Details of Project

This research examines the proposed TikTok ban in the U.S. raises concerns regarding national security, data privacy, economic impact, and free speech. The government cites risks of Chinese influence through ByteDance, but TikTok’s data collection practices are similar to U.S. platforms like Facebook. With 170 million U.S. users and contributing $24 billion to the economy, a ban could disrupt businesses, particularly small creators and marginalized communities who rely on the platform for income. While security concerns exist, critics argue the ban is politically motivated and favors U.S. tech giants. Public support for the ban has declined, highlighting the need for a balanced approach that ensures data protection without compromising economic and digital freedoms.
