Understanding ADHD in Black Childhood and the Cost of Misunderstanding
Biography
Hawa Abdoulaye is a Professional Communications graduate student at Toronto Metropolitan University, maintaining a high academic standing and on track to graduate with distinction in June 2025. Before transitioning into communications, she studied Business Administration with a focus on HR Management & Leadership, which shaped her ability to merge strategic, people-focused insights with technical skills. This foundation has allowed her to excel in graphic design, marketing, and international collaboration. Hawa was selected as a standout student and invited to participate in The Global Campus Studio Showcase 2024, where she discussed international collaboration and creative work tailored to diverse audiences. She was also among the recipients of the 2018 BC International Student Ambassador Scholarship, awarded to outstanding international students for their leadership and contributions.
Recognized for her academic excellence, Hawa has earned a spot on the Creative School Dean’s List for two consecutive years and co-developed Shades of Success, a website promoting inclusivity for Black and Brown influencers, which placed 3rd in the course CMN 222: Digital Discourse and Design. Through Wayble’s Career Pathway Program, Hawa worked with MIA My Ally, developing infographics to promote their products while receiving mentorship from industry professionals. As a trilingual speaker, she connects effortlessly with diverse audiences, bringing unique global perspectives to her work in communications. Outside of academics, Hawa is actively involved in campus community and student well-being. She participated in Black Student Wellbeing’s ‘Let’s Talk About Us’ program, a six-week initiative on self-care, joy, and community for Black-identified students. She also assisted in coordinating the Midwifery Education Program event at Toronto Metropolitan University, serving as a meeter/greeter and supporting the event’s logistics. See the event photo here. Hawa is committed to using her diverse skills and experiences to contribute meaningfully to the fields of communications, design, and marketing.
Details of Project
This study examines racial disparities in ADHD diagnosis among Black children, highlighting how systemic biases, cultural misunderstandings, and environmental factors contribute to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Based on individual accounts and expert insights gathered through research, the study reveals how these biases in education and healthcare systems lead to misdiagnosis, punitive discipline, and long-term negative outcomes. It advocates for culturally competent assessments and systemic changes to ensure Black children receive the support and diagnosis they deserve. The study stresses the importance of culturally sensitive diagnostic tools, better training for healthcare professionals, and expanded access to care, aiming to spark meaningful conversations on educational equity, mental health, and racial justice with actionable solutions for the future.
