Beauty Influencers and Brand Access: The Role of Follower Count, Niche, and Location

Biography

Hi, My name is Julianna Brady-Ramirez and I am a Professional Communications major, minoring in Public Relations.  With a strong interest in digital storytelling, I enjoy exploring the intersection of branding, content creation, and audience engagement. In my spare time, I create and share content on social media, fuelled by a passion for creativity and connection in the digital space.

My inspiration for this research project was my own experience with the influencer industry as a smaller creator, who often faces challenges getting opportunities compared to bigger creators.

Details of Project

This project assesses the dynamics of the opportunities given to influencers in the beauty industry. The volume of opportunities different influencers get is the focus to understand the trends in who receive opportunities and who does not. This assessment was accomplished by looking at three categories: niche, location, and following count. The methodology for this project was a comparative content analysis in which two influencers were compared to each other in their respective category to analyze differences within the industry in Q4 for brand opportunities.

This information is important in the field of communications, especially within the field of public relations and influencer relations, because it highlights the differences in opportunities per person that are not always consistent and reflective of the quality of their content. It brings awareness to the crucial elements that contribute to these opportunities or the lack of them, along with the exclusivity it creates in the industry. It further shows that analyzing these differences is important as it recognizes that these opportunities are deliberately given to people that align with brand expectations such as location, niche, and following, which is under-explored in academia.
