All Eyes on You – The Effects Surveillance has on Human Behavior

Bio

Hi, I’m Francesca Strangis. I am studying Professional Communications, during my 6th year at Toronto Metropolitan University. I have always had a passion for communications, and am intrigued by the opportunities that can be reached through this program. Being able to work on this research project and study a topic that I am so passionate about has been such a rewarding experience.

Research Summary

Surveillance is something that is meant to protect and control an individual’s environment. Responses to the known fact that they are being watched can be studied by a number of factors. This research study will explore why individuals act the way they do when they are being surveilled and what factors affect their behaviors.  Applying Foucault’s notion of the panopticon, we can examine how we are living in a post panoptic era. The fear of being watched can drive individuals to act in many different ways, and could yield both positive and negative effects. Using a mixed method paradigm, scholarly and peer reviewed sources will be examined to conduct a scholarly paper on the link between surveillance and moral behavior.
