The Environment and Surveillance Capitalism

A dark blue infographic poster titled 'SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM'S HARM ON THE ENVIRONMENT' in white and green text, framed by a 'REC' recording overlay. The central graphic features a white outline of a person from behind, seated at a computer with a bright green screen displaying abstract data visualizations. Subtle background elements include light blue gears, dollar signs, and world globes. Green circuit-board lines and a Wi-Fi symbol are also present. A paragraph explains: 'THE ENHANCED CYCLE OF SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM IMPROVES MARKETING TECHNIQUES TO FUEL CONSUMERISM. MASS PRODUCTION TO MEET CONSUMER DEMAND ULTIMATELY IS HARMING THE ENVIRONMENT.' Yellow text at the bottom credits 'IMAN SHERAZI' and 'CMN 490 SIGNIFY 2023'.

Biography

I’m currently in my final semester at the school of Professional Communication, and have been interested in learning more about social marketing spaces and their relationship with our environment. I enjoy being outdoors especially for hiking and I’m also an abstract painter, so typically I do use social media to share my work. These two aspects of my life prompted me to see industry trends which I wanted to explore in this year’s Capstone Project.

Research Summary

My research centers around the idea that surveillance capitalism has made consumers to become susceptible to marketing techniques, which are ultimately harming the environment. Consumers are unaware of the power imbalances between them and large companies, and this is contributing to climate issues we are currently facing.
