Katarina Bonnick

A close-up portrait of a woman with medium skin, dark straight hair, and a neutral expression. She wears visible eyeliner, long eyelashes, sculpted brows, blush, and pinkish-nude lipstick. A thin gold chain is visible over her black crewneck top. The background is a blurred indoor setting with a dining area on the left and natural light from windows on the right.

My name is Katarina Bonnick, and I am a fourth year Professional Communication student graduating from Ryerson University.

Research

My research analyzes misogyny in hip hop and the effect it has on women’s self image, as well as how the culture influences young male and females.

A graphic illustrating gender double standards. The top half shows 'WOMEN VS. MEN' above two head-and-shoulder silhouettes. The woman, with red hair and lips, is inscribed with terms like 'BITCH,' 'DIRTY,' 'WHORE,' 'SLUT,' 'ASKING FOR IT,' and 'SLEEPS AROUND.' The man, with black hair, is inscribed with terms like 'MANLY,' 'HOT,' 'PLAYER,' 'STUD,' and 'BADASS.' Overlaid on both figures are 'HOOKER,' 'SIREN,' 'PROSTITUTE.' The bottom half features a red box with white text: 'MISOGYNY IN HIP-HOP CULTURE' followed by 'WOMEN & HIP HOP = OVER SEXUALIZED, OBJECTIFIED, MISCONCEPTION,' all set against a white grid background.
