The Borderline Self: Understanding the Experience of BPD

Research Summary

This project explores the emotional experiences of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD is broadly characterized as chronic emotional dysregulation that results from sudden shifts between extremes concerning self-perception and interpersonal relationships. With the purpose of conceptualizing alternative methods of communicating non-normative emotional processing, this research identifies significant themes and motifs found in lyrical music that resonate with Borderline individuals. The thematic analysis of lyrical music will provide a deeper and more empathetic understanding of the Borderline experience and can be used as an educational tool for those learning about BPD and for those trying to unlearn the harmful stigma that is associated with the disorder.
