Biography

Signify 2025

My name is Kareena Bhatia, and I am a Professional Communications student at Toronto Metropolitan University. I come from a South-East Asian background and have a deep appreciation for my cultural music and cuisine.

I love spending quality time with family and friends and am always eager to explore new countries and experience different cultures. I also enjoy shopping and staying on trend, keeping up with the latest styles. Fitness is an important part of my lifestyle—I love going to the gym to stay active and energized.

For my final research project, I chose to explore the impact of cannabis legalization on impaired driving and polysubstance use. Although marijuana is legalized, I’ve never tried it myself, but I’ve always been curious about the hype, its effects, and whether legalization has made a real difference in Canada and other parts of the worldwide.

Lastly, as I near graduation, I’m excited to choose my next steps for a master’s degree, looking forward to new experiences and opportunities for growth.

Details of Project

My project examines the impact of cannabis legalization on impaired driving and poly-substance use, focusing on public safety risks, enforcement challenges, and the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns and policies. By analyzing region-specific data from Canada, Colorado, New York, New Zealand, and the UK, it offers a global perspective on post-legalization driving trends. The research highlights gaps in enforcement measures, such as inconsistent roadside testing protocols, and evaluates the effectiveness of media campaigns in influencing public behaviour. It concludes with evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at reducing cannabis-impaired driving incidents, strengthening future public safety initiatives, and promoting greater public awareness.
