Purpose
This research investigates how society’s view of beauty and self-worth has been influenced by the development of body image on social media. Social media outlets have a big impact on how people view themselves and other people, affecting their sense of identity, confidence, and self-worth. Examining social media’s influence on body image and self-perception—both good and negative—is the goal of the study. The study especially aims to respond to the following research question: What effects has the evolution of body image on social media had on society’s view of beauty and self-worth? Assessing the wider cultural and psychological effects of digital media on self-image requires an awareness of these changes.
Methods
This study examined several social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter, to comprehend how body image is portrayed across various demographics and content types. The main areas of research were the frequency of modified and filtered content, influencer patterns, and user interaction with postings about body image.
A comprehensive analysis of scholarly publications and internet articles also offered deeper understanding of previous research and professional viewpoints on the topic. These resources aided in placing the historical development of body image trends and their emotional impact on people in context. A more sophisticated awareness of influencer culture, digital changes, and societal expectations related to beauty standards was also obtained from watching documentaries on Netflix and other streaming services. The psychological effects that tailored digital personas have on consumers and influencers, as well as the behind-the-scenes aspects of social media content generation, were all covered in these documentaries. This study sought to offer a thorough understanding of social media’s changing impact on body image and perception of oneself by combining data collection from social media platforms, secondary research from scholarly sources, and visual narratives from films.
