I’m Hannah, and I’m finishing up my degree in Professional Communications at Toronto Metropolitan University. While I’ve really enjoyed studying communications, I’ve realized my bigger goal is to one day own a business of my own. I’m especially interested in how businesses can better connect with the communities they serve. After managing a coffee shop for two summers, I got a closer look at what goes into running a business–from the small details to understanding how customers respond to certain choices. That hands-on experience is what inspired my research on tipping culture and customer sentiment. I’m passionate about finding new ways to grow, adapt, and build something that creates connections and brings people together. To build a successful business, you have to put people first.

This research explores how tipping prompts have expanded beyond traditional service roles into non-traditional spaces like fast food, retail, and self-checkouts. By analyzing public comments on TikTok and Instagram, the study uncovers growing consumer frustration with digital tip requests and highlights how these prompts may actually harm small businesses by driving away customers. The findings suggest that rethinking POS tipping practices could help restore customer trust and satisfaction.
