Biography

Breanna Thomas is a fourth-year Professional Communication student at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) with over 5 years of experience in the tech, creative and non-profit industries. She is a social media expert and tech entrepreneur who brings dream-like stories to life and mixes creativity with innovation. While at TMU, her fashion solution, Style Code App, has received entrepreneurial guidance from DMZ, the world-leading tech incubator, and sponsorship from the Society of the Creative School. Breanna understands the importance of communication and analyzes the hidden representations not only within language but also within fashion, beauty and societal norms.

Details of Project

A digital media content analysis was conducted to formulate the meaning behind one’s physical appearance, capturing cultural shifts in different demographics and geographic locations. People intentionally or unintentionally encode messages through clothes, makeup, tattoos and surgical enhancements, which can be decoded to help people understand culture, society and/or history. Individuals make sense of their reality through expression, which takes different mediums and forms; one’s physical appearance showcases technological drivers, social norms and economic forces. This research project aims to fill gaps in academic research, building a conceptual framework that ties meaning to clothes while consolidating theories, codes and information surrounding clothing practices and external forces.
