Biography

Anirudh Biju is a student in the School of Professional Communication at Toronto Metropolitan University, with a research focus on health communication and academic performance. His capstone project, “Sleep Matters: Investigating the Impact of Sleep Patterns on Academic Success,” explores the relationship between sleep habits and student outcomes using secondary data analysis and evidence from large-scale studies. Through this research, Anirudh aims to highlight the critical role of sleep in cognitive function, learning, and institutional policy, advocating for data-informed strategies to support student well-being and academic success.

Details of Project

This study investigates the connection between sleep patterns such as duration, quality, and consistency, and academic performance among university students. Using secondary data from peer-reviewed studies and large-scale datasets, including the CMU Sleep Dataset and a meta-analysis of 54 studies, the research identifies strong correlations between regular, sufficient sleep and higher GPA outcomes. Key findings show that students with consistent bedtimes and 7–8 hours of sleep perform significantly better academically. The study underscores the importance of institutional support for healthy sleep habits and aims to inform student wellness initiatives and education policy reform.
