Research

The topic of my research project is regarding the mainstream Canadian media's coverage of the University of Waterloo's admission scandal. The purpose of my research project is to address the rhetoric used by the Canadian media outlets who covered this scandal and publicize the University of Waterloo’s divisive entrance practices. I conducted a qualitative critical discourse analysis in the form of case study research.

A blue academic poster titled 'The Adjustment Factor: Critical Discourse Analysis of University of Waterloo's Admissions Scandal.' It outlines the purpose to address media rhetoric, introduces the 2018 Global News story on the university's 30-year practice of tracking high school marks for first-year engineering students to account for grade inflation, and poses the research question on other factors for grade drops. The methods involve a qualitative critical discourse analysis of 10 Canadian news outlets. Results highlight media rhetoric regarding underachievement and identify unmeasured factors hindering student transition, including structural barriers, socio-cultural perspectives, power hierarchies, structural inequalities, and historical political struggles.
