A blonde woman in a black long-sleeved dress and large dangle earrings smiles brightly at the camera, holding a small silver-chained purse. In the background, other guests mingle at a formal event with elegant decor, including chandeliers and hanging white floral arrangements. A band setup and a bar area are also visible.

Gabrielle Brisebois is a fourth year Professional Communications student at Ryerson University with a minor in Public Relations. Through the years, the phenomena that is 'social networking' has captured her attention and is what inspired this study into the negative impacts it has, and continues to have, on today's youth.

Research

My research project focuses on the negative impacts that the social network 'Instagram' has on today's youth, with findings that confirm increased feelings of anxiety and depression amongst users, as well as aspects that negatively influence one's self perception and feeling of adequacy.

A mental health infographic on an orange background. The top text reads '52% OF INDIVIDUALS SAY THAT SOCIAL MEDIA NEGATIVELY IMPACTS THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.' Below, there are six rectangular panels arranged in two rows of three. Top row, from left to right: a light pink panel with three stacked books (pink, blue, yellow) and 'READ A BOOK'; a white panel with an outline of a human brain and 'ANXIETY WONT WIN'; a white panel with a teal and pink sneaker and 'GO OUTSIDE, GET EXERCISE'. Bottom row, from left to right: a white panel with a pink outline of a vintage phone handset and 'TURN OFF YOUR PHONE'; a light pink panel with a pink whisk and 'COOK A NEW RECIPE'; a light pink panel with an illustration of two women wearing hijabs talking, one holding a smartphone, and 'TALK TO AN OLD FRIEND'.
