A clear headshot of a young woman with shoulder-length brown hair, bright blue eyes, and a subtle smile. She wears a ribbed sweater with grey, white, and pink stripes, and a delicate necklace, set against a bright white background.

My name is Darby Rolfe. I am a fourth-year undergraduate student studying Professional Communication, minoring in Sales Management and Service Quality. I work full-time as a Veterinary Assistant at a reputable animal shelter in Toronto. My passions include improving the welfare of animals, fostering animals, adventuring in the outdoors, and enjoying the company of others.

Research

This study focused on the departmental differences experienced by employees working in shelter medicine. This was an explorative project which utilized quantitative, closed-ended, anonymous surveys to collect data.

A blue infographic titled 'You're Stressin' Meowt!' in large white script, with faint cat fur and cage bars in the background. It reports that '90.3% OF ANIMAL SHELTER EMPLOYEES EXPERIENCE EMOTIONAL AND OR PHYSICAL BURNOUT*'. The text continues: 'EACH OCCUPATIONAL DEPARTMENT HAS OBSTACLES AND NEEDS'. It lists: with a yellow heart icon, 'VETERINARIANS STRUGGLE WITH COMPLEX MEDICAL CASES AND SHELTER POLITICS'; with a yellow paw print icon, 'VETERINARY ASSISTANTS STRUGGLE WITH EUTHANASIAS AND JANITORIAL DUTIES'. The conclusion states: 'IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT SHELTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS PRIORITIZE DEPARTMENTAL DIFFERENCES WHEN BUILDING TRAINING AND ACCOMMODATION STRATEGIES'. A small footnote reads: '*REFERENCING RESULTS FROM THE 2019 ANIMAL CARE AND EXPOSURE SURVEY'.
