Research Summary

For my capstone project, I chose to research the mental health impacts of gender-based discrimination for women who work in STEM. There is a lack of women in STEM industries, thus making them more susceptible to differential treatment. However, many prior studies have failed to address the effects of such treatment on their mental-well being. Based on my findings, gender-based discrimination at work can lead to an increase in mental health issues for women in STEM. Specifically, it is correlated with general anxiety, depressive symptoms, low-self esteem, as well as anger and resentment. For instance, many women have reported being excluded by their male colleagues during work activities. This may lead to lower self-esteem because they’re isolated from their peers and are not seen as valued. This is a very significant issue and STEM organizations must react promptly by implementing programs to support these women. As well, it is important to include gender-bias modules or discussions during the training process. However, organizations from all industries should take these findings into consideration. Not only will this benefit their employees, but it will also allow companies to thrive and grow.
