How Occupational Therapy Helps Adolescents with Anxiety

Biography

Hi everyone! I’m Nojella, a fourth-year Professional Communication student at Toronto Metropolitan University. Over the past few years, I’ve gained  experience working in environments focused on supporting youth and enhancing well-being. This includes roles where I’ve worked closely with children, which inspired me to explore how communication strategies can be applied to improve mental health outcomes. I’m passionate about combining research, design, and storytelling to make complex topics accessible and engaging, especially when it comes to understanding and supporting adolescent mental health.

Details of Project

This research investigates how occupational therapy (OT) can effectively support adolescents struggling with anxiety through specialized interventions that promote healthy coping mechanisms and improve emotional regulation. Anxiety disorders are prevalent among teenagers, significantly impacting their daily lives, school performance, social interactions, and long-term development.  This study explores how various OT strategies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, mindfulness practices, sensory-based activities, and social skills training, can help adolescents manage anxiety. By analyzing existing literature, case studies, and expert insights, the research identifies evidence-based approaches that have proven effective in reducing anxiety symptoms. Additionally, this project highlights the importance of developing customized programs tailored to the needs of adolescents.
By emphasizing practical, non-pharmacological strategies and creating accessible frameworks, this research demonstrates how occupational therapy can empower adolescents to overcome anxiety, build independence, and confidently navigate critical developmental stages towards a healthier future.
