Biography

Hi, I’m Emma Reuben. I’m a fourth-year Professional Communications student minoring in Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. I’m passionate about the way people think, speak, and connect, especially when it comes to how health and wellness are communicated in digital spaces. Outside the classroom, I’ve worked in government and public relations, where I’ve developed experience in communication strategy, client engagement, and brand storytelling. I’m also deeply interested in wellness, fitness, and how psychology plays into the choices we make, especially when it comes to who and what we trust online.

My capstone project combines my academic interests and personal passions to explore how health-related conspiracy theories are subtly spread through influencer content. It’s a creative, research-driven take on misinformation in the digital age, and it’s just one example of how I love to blend curiosity, creativity, and strategy.

Details of Project

This project explores how health-related conspiracy theories, like raw milk and anti-vaccine rhetoric, are subtly repackaged and normalized through social media. By analyzing how sentiment and rhetorical tactics drive engagement, I uncovered just how easily misinformation spreads when wrapped in aspirational, influencer-led narratives. The findings are eye-opening: emotionally charged content outperforms facts by a landslide. This research underscores the urgent need for smarter, more strategic communication to protect public health in today’s viral media landscape.
