“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Bio

Hi i’m Gabriella, I’m a forth year Professional Communications student at Toronto Metropolitan University with a passion for sports media, hence the reason I did my capstone on the ” Don’t ask, don’t tell” rule in sports. I am very passionate about bringing a new outlook to the world of Sports and Sports media, encouraging everyone to think beyond the thin lines.

Research Summary

The intersecting worlds between sports and media, particularly regarding misconceptions perpetuated through media coverage, warrant deeper exploration. This research delves into the darker aspects of the sports media landscape, posing key questions about the experiences of athletes from the POC community and their perceptions of sports media’s impact. Data collected undergoes statistical analysis to elucidate differing viewpoints, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of sports media and individual perspectives within it.

Research Poster

A detailed research poster from Toronto Metropolitan University, 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL,' with a torn paper background effect and portraits of diverse individuals whose mouths are covered by black paint strokes. The poster includes an introduction on social media's impact on sports and the portrayal of African Americans, a methodology outlining Instagram analytics and secondary research, and a results section with a horizontal bar graph. The graph, 'BIPOC Vs. Non-BIPOC Instagram School Records Achievement Posts,' compares engagement metrics (Comments, Saves, Shares, Engagement, Likes) for four categories, indicating significantly higher engagement for BIPOC posts. Recommendations advocate for transparency, inclusivity, and fairness in sports media, especially for the BIPOC community. A QR code is in the bottom right corner.
