The Colour of Gender

A hand-drawn cartoon titled 'The Colour of Gender' is displayed on a white sign at the top. The background is segmented into four colored quadrants: top-left pink, top-right light blue, bottom-left pink, and bottom-right light blue, with a blue vertical line and a pink horizontal line dividing them. On the left, a simplistic blue-bodied figure with a white head and a single hair curl holds a smaller, pink-bodied doll with two curls. Also on the left are a pink lipstick tube and a small blue toy car. On the right, a simplistic pink-bodied figure with a white head and two hair curls holds a blue wrench. Nearby are a white baseball with red stitching, a pink handbag, and a pink high-heeled shoe. In the center, a gray-bodied figure with a white head, with an arm raised and two black question marks floating above its head, stands bewildered at the intersection of the pink and blue sections.

Biography

I’m Allandra, a fourth-year student at Toronto Metropolitan University majoring in Professional Communication with a minor in Communication Design. Visual art has always been a passion of mine, so it has been a wonderful experience blending creativity and academia throughout my time at Toronto Metropolitan University. I’m excited to take the skills I have learned at TMU and develop them further in the working world!

Research Summary

I designed an exhibit on gendered colours and objects for my creative research project. For the exhibit, I made six images that feature gendered objects painted in a colour associated with the opposite gender. Participants are asked to label each image as masculine or feminine. My goal is that viewers of my exhibit will start questioning their idea of gender and its connection to colour in their everyday lives.
